With Walt Disney World and Universal, Orlando attracts a huge amount of Florida’s tourism. However, the sunshine state has so much more to offer than just that. There are so many great cities that tourists never see so why not explore elsewhere, especially if you’ve already experienced Orlando?
1. Miami
Miami has so much to offer. South Beach is known for gorgeous art deco architecture, waterside restaurants, trendy malls and of course, beautiful beaches. You’ll find everything from historical attractions to high-end shopping so there’s something for everyone. Make sure you explore Little Haiti and Little Havan, and explore the Quays with a Miami boat for rent for an adventure you won’t forget.
2. Tampa
Tampa’s a popular destination for families with kids thanks to epic wild-life attractions. Visit Busch Gardens, a ginormous amusement park with a zoo, or the Tampa Zoo, Tampa Aquarium or Big Cat Rescue. Other recommendations include Glazer Children’s Museum or the Museum of Science and Industry.
3. St. Petersburg
Across the bay from Tampa, St. Petersburg’s known for great beaches and a mild climate. Also, Clearwater’s located nearby and it has one of the best beaches in Florida so that’s a must as well. If you’re big into the arts, you’ll fall head over heels in love with its theaters and art museums, ie. the Dali Museum and the Morean Art Center. They also have really popular boat tours that cover everything from fun cruises to dolphin spotting. If you’re a nature lover, relax in Caladesi Island State Park.
4. Key West
Key West has a slower pace than other parts of Florida, and the atmosphere, architecture and food are influenced by Carribbean culture so you’ll get a nice island feel while vacationing. It’s a must-visit for literature lovers because the city’s been home to famous authors like Robert Frost, Tennessee Williams and Ernest Hemingway. Explore shops, restaurants, museums or the Aquarium for a relaxed trip you won’t soon forget.
5. Daytona
This is where you need to be if you want to experience NASCAR up close and personal. Every February, they host the Daytona 500 NASCAR Race. Daytona Beach was once known as the ultimate party spot, but it now attracts tourists of all ages thanks to the boardwalk. It’s packed with amusement rides, games, events and restaurants so it’s a fun time all around. Also, make a note to check out the Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art while you’re there.
6. Sanibel Island
If you’re looking for something a bit more high-end, head to Sanibel Island for its luxury resorts. You’ll often spot celebs here because it’s bougie AF. Get R&R at your hotel, but also take time to check out their many boutiques or take to the seas for a boat ride or five. What makes Sanibel unusual is its dedication to conservation. Many of the resorts work with naturalists to educate tourists about the local ecosystem and wildlife, which includes the loggerhead sea turtle, manatee, dolphins and bald eagles.
