In honor of halloween, I’ve decided to share my scariest ghost story with you guys. I’ve experienced some weird shit in my lifetime, but this experience definitely takes the cake. I did my undergrad at the Peabody Institute of Music, and it’s been around for 150+ years so there’s a ton of history there.
Back when I was a freshman, my teacher gave me a key to her studio in the conservatory so I could practice on a good piano whenever her room was free. I spent numerous evenings working until 1-2 AM, and I was usually one of the only students there, which was kind of scary but also nice at the same time.
One night, I finished really late and was waiting for the elevator, but it didn’t come? I was there for a good 10-15 minutes, but I got tired of waiting so I decided to take the stairs. I kept my head down as I walked because I was exhausted and didn’t feel like saying hi to anyone in case I ran into somebody. To my surprise, I passed someone on my way back to the dorms. I didn’t see what she looked like though – all I remember is dark hair and a ponytail.
The conservatory staircase is designed in a spiral and has a ridiculous amount of reverb, like my footsteps sound like smashing gongs in that space. When I realized that I didn’t hear a second set of steps, I froze. I looked up to see if the girl was there, but she was gone (!!!!) Cue the freakout.
I peaced out of there SO fast. I ran back to my room and just sat at my desk. The air was off and the window was closed, and I called my parents to tell them what happened. As I was recounting my tale, I felt a huge gust of wind in my room. Repeat: my air was off and my window was closed.
Suffice it to say, I slept with the lights ON that night. Now, fast forward 2 days. I was still afraid, but I needed to work so I searched for a practice room on the 2nd floor of the supposedly non-haunted building. As I was looking for a room, I saw a group of 4 girls chatting excitedly in the reflection of a window. I didn’t know who they were, but I thought I recognized the girl with her back to me! She had a ponytail and looked like the woman I walked past on the spiral staircase.
You guys have NO idea how relieved I was…until I turned around and ONLY SAW 3 GIRLS STANDING THERE. Yeah, not gonna lie, it was a huge WTF moment. I thought I was seeing things so I decided to approach them and ask if there was a fourth girl. They looked at me like I was a crazy person and said no.
…
…
…
Yeah, I never saw that girl again, but that was definitely a creepy experience. Many students and faculty members there have stories of their own. Like my buddy who was running through his concert program at Goodwin Hall (one of the bigger halls at Peabody) after class. He finished playing and “someone” started clapping. He thought a friend was messing with him so he searched the entire hall, but no one was there. FYI, the hall was locked from the inside so it’s not like anyone could get in.
Or my friend who was practicing late until the AM and heard someone singing right next door. She went out to say hello because she thought it was a colleague, but she was the only one there. I seriously could go on and on and on, and I have no doubt in my mind that Peabody (or at least parts of Peabody) is haunted. I rarely tell people my story because I know how insane I sound, but it’s the truth! I’m curious to hear if you guys have any experiences? If so, leave me a comment below.
wow Kim, that is some scary stuff,Wtf. Great look , relaxed casual
Wow that is a freaky story. That happened to me. I was at my school (college) in the computer lab alone. I was doing some homework. Had noise cancelling headphones on listening to jrock when I kept hearing laughter, it ws a guy laughing. A deep laugh too. Finally I got up to look around. No one, not even a librarian. I packed up my crap and got out of there quick.

Thanks for reading, Jennifer! Hope you have a great Halloween.
That’s a riot — great story. They say that “beautiful art puts us in touch with the divine.” But its sounds like at the Peabody Institute, beautiful music puts you in touch with all kinds of spirits! Really like the dress — very pretty. Enjoy your week.
I dont have any ghost story,.. But when i read yours, its really scary,…
I’m a Baltimore girl, and I’ve heard about Peabody (and the whole Mount Vernon area) being haunted for my entire life! Your experience is soooo creepy, it gave me chills to read it!
Happy Halloween 🙂

Thanks for taking the time to read! Yay for Baltimore girls =D
wow i read Your story and it was really amazing!!! you’re so talented in telling and in creating emotions via words. What happened to You was a ghost that saw your sweet soul and wanted to make a contact with you. Sometimes they need some comfort word or just to be remembered. As i told You on IG i had many experiences with ghost and i did lots of studies about them. One of those experience was this one: i was visiting a Renassaince building in my home town Ferrara, called Marfisa Palace, it has a big garden surrounding for 3 sides of it. Once i was in the garden i saw a blonde lady in modern outfit staring at me and i felt a shiver on my spine but at that moment i didn’t know why. Then i continued my visit and when i returned to that side of the garden she was still there sitting on a step, when i passed by she continued staring at me and i felt that shiver again. Immediately she rose up and go away around the near corner and there she disappeared. I was totally amazed. the day after i saw on a book the image of Marfisa, the owner of the palace, then i searched for other images (all from old pictures and illustrations) and i’ve found that i saw Marfisa in the garden staring at me. Sorry for my long story Kim, I wanted to share it with You and Your followers. Happy Halloween!!!

Thanks so much for reading and for your kind words <3
Looks like we all have ghost stories. Here’s some from childhood.
Story 1
I was about 8 years old and we were visiting a family friend. Their setup was 6 houses on one lot. So there were 3 houses on the left and 3 houses on the right. Our friend’s house was the last one one on the left. In the middle was just a long and wide driveway. It was night but not late … maybe 7 pm. I was outside by myself riding my friend’s skateboard. I had skated up and down the long driveway so now I was staking along the sidewalk. On the sidewalk was a street lamp. I wasn’t allowed to go far so really I was just skating along the width of the driveway. As I passed the streetlamp, this girl asked if she could ride the skateboard. She looked like the little girl from poltergeist (but this was years before the movie came out). White, long blond hair, white pajama dress, barefoot. Standing underneath the streetlamp, she was glowing.
Initially, I told her “it’s my friend’s board, not mine.” After a couple of pushes, I thought that was mean and that I should let her ride it. I turned around and she was gone. Mind you I didn’t hear anyone running away. I described the wide driveway to convey how far someone would need to walk to the nearest house. She was no where to be found. Not on the street, not in any of the homes.
Needless to say, I bolted back to my friends house. And the time it took for me to run back to my friend’s house was longer than the time it took for her to disappear.
Story 2
I was about 6 or 7. It was Saturday morning so I got up early to watch cartoons. I got up and walked to our living room. When I got there, on the couch, I saw what looked like a shadow figure. It was in the shape of someone wrapped up in a black blanket, sitting up on the couch with their feet on the couch.
Not understanding what I was seeing, I just went back to my bedroom and hid under the covers.
Later that morning, during breakfast, I told my parents that I saw someone this morning. I told them that it was a shadow figure sitting on the couch all in black as if wrapped up in a black blanket.
My parents had a strange look on their face. Then they said that I had seen my aunt. She had passed away in the Philippines the night before on the sofa of her home.
Story 3
While visiting in the Philippines, we drove up to my Uncle’s place. He had servants and as we drove up, I noticed one maid greeting us. She waved at us so I waved back. When we parked in the garage and got out of the car, she was gone. I was thinking that she was just fast. After all, the other servants were busy doing their chores.
We were shown our rooms and one night as I was going to the game room, I saw this maid again, walking by my room in the hallway. She moved as if floating. I remember thinking how graceful she was.
Fast forward a couple of days, I was noticing the other servants and didn’t see the maid that greeted us. I asked my aunt and uncle where the other servants were. They told me that there was no other servants. I told them that I had seen another servant when we first arrived and a couple of times during the night. They quickly fetched a photo album and asked me if I saw the maid I was talking about. After flipping through a few pages, I finally found a picture of her. I pointed her out to them. They told me that she was one of their first servants but that she passed away many years ago. I was not around when she was working for them so I never knew of her until I saw her ghost.
Story 4
Senior year in high school, I was invited a friend’s birthday party. It was her house so they decorated it and had streamers tape to the ceiling all handing down, straight. My friends decided to play with a Ouiji Board at midnight … on her birthday. This was my first time to use one. So placed my had on the “moving piece.” We asked it questions and it moved. When it moved I accused the other person of moving it while she accused me of using it. We did this for a while, asking what their name was and when they died. After about 30 min, we looked up at the ceiling and noticed that all of the streamers had curled up. We quickly threw the board away in the trash outside.
Story 5
Some relatives were on vacation. They had stopped on a bridge for a photo. They had sat near the edge and when the photo was taken, one of them had fallen to her death onto the rocks below. This was ruled an accident. But when the photo was developed, around the person to died, you can see a shadow figure, as if wrapping his arms around her from behind. Apparently one of my relatives (as told by her brother) is a conduit for spirits.
