Sensible Stylista’s all about glam living on a budget, which I’ve previously defined as smart shopping. That to me means knowing when to save and when to splurge, but it’s also knowing how to max out what you have. This means utilizing warm weather clothing in winter so your closet’s full of year ’round pieces, not just seasonal ones. So, we’ll be discussing layering tips on today’s post.
Smart shopping means knowing when to save and when to splurge, but it also means knowing how to max out what you have. Click To TweetYour first layer should be form fitting to avoid bulk. You only see a peek of this (maybe a collar, a sleeve or a sliver up front) so make sure it’s on the thinner side. Personally, I like starting with short sleeve shirts and tanks.
Your mid-layer’s going to be a little thicker – think vests, sweaters, blazers and cardigans. I only wore 3 layers for today’s OOTD, but feel free to add an additional one here if you want. The outermost layer’s going to be the biggest, and I recommend going long, but that by no means is a hard rule.
Layering’s an awesome way to experiment with pieces that are already in your closet. There’s just so much to play around with – different textures, patterns, colors, fabrics, the world is your oyster.
When it comes to layering, outerwear’s your best friend. For example, I’m wearing two today. I threw on a chunky knit cardigan on top of a jean jacket for an effortlessly stylish ensemble.
My knit’s sleeves are fairly big so I didn’t have to deal with any unwanted bunching. Give this combo a go – you can also try wearing a peacoat over a hoodie and even doubling up on coats if it’s cold out! Wear a looser style on top of a trendier more fitted design for a cool vibe.
As much as I enjoy layers, it’s easy to look unbalanced so make sure you think about proportions. If you have ample volume up top, consider wearing form-fitting bottoms or over-the-knee boots for a more flattering silhouette. I’m wearing high waisted Madewell skinny jeans and platform sneakers to create the illusion of a leaner figure.
I’m also a big proponent of layering jewelry. My fingers are high key gross so I rarely wear rings or bracelets, but necklaces are a must in my book. I purchased this particular piece at Indigo Octopus (all 3 chains are connected), but a lot of people enjoy creating their own combos.
Unsure how to go about it? Experiment with different lengths, try mixing metals, incorporate pearls or [insert gems of your choice], and/or throw in a personalized piece or two. Let your creativity run wild because there are no “wrong” choices in fashion – it’s PERSONAL style for a reason!
