As you all know, I’m big into visual illusions. People often compliment me on my figure, but they don’t realize it’s not actually my body. Well, technically it is, but I’m a lot “bigger” than I look. To be honest, this is the heaviest I’ve been in years, but I know how to dress to flatter. I’m very picky about what I wear, and I always make sure to highlight my best assets and mask my “flaws.” Keep reading to learn my secrets on how to look 10lbs lighter without exercising.
Now, before we talk tips, I just want to clarify that I am by no means body shaming. These are just tips I’ve picked up over the years that I’m sharing today for those of you interested. So, without further ado, let’s get things rolling.
1. Highlight the small of your waist.
High-waisted bottoms are a godsend for more reasons than one. They’re comfortable, form flattering, and conveniently mask muffin top! Whether you’re wearing a skirt, jeans or shorts, the high-waisted cut will do your body good.
If you’re wearing a dress, try belting it to draw the eye upwards. It’ll create the illusion of longer legs and give you an exaggerated hourglass figure. For great pant options, check out Aeropostale. I know their clothing’s geared towards teens, but their jeans are awesome! I don’t really buy anything else from them, but they’re one of my go-tos when it comes to jeans.
2. Throw on a pair of nude heels.
Try and find shoes that match your skin tone – the closer they are in color, the better! Your goal is to create one long line so you look taller. You’ll seem thinner by default because you’re lengthening your legs, creating a leaner silhouette. If you find platform heels, that’s even better. For affordable options, browse Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Ross, and DSW.
3. Wear the right undergarments.
If you haven’t already, make sure you get yourself fitted. I had issues with bra bulge for years, and I couldn’t figure out why for the longest time. Turns out, I was wearing the wrong size! In regards to underwear, look for elastic waistbands with lace trim to avoid panty lines. In my opinion, they’re the most flattering to wear, and they’re super cute, which is an obvious plus. And comfort goes without saying! I own a bajillion of these Victoria’s Secret panties, but I only purchase them when there’s a promo going on. They often have bundle sales so keep an eye out instead of paying full price.
4. Experiment with shapewear.
If you want to kill it for a special occasion, spanx will help you look 1-2 sizes smaller. It’s not particularly comfortable, but you’ll look good. Bandage pieces work magic in a similar way as well. I own several mini-dresses and skirts, and they’re basically wearable shapewear. Don’t skimp on them though! If you want them to be effective, purchase high-quality styles.
5. Wear black tights with black heels.
Like tip #2, this combination will instantly elongate your body! Wear it with a cute black mini skirt for a chic cold weather ensemble that will impress. Sub out heels with boots and tights with leggings if you want extra warmth. Wolford stockings are a high end option, but you can find wonderful alternatives pretty much anywhere. Kohl’s has a great clearance section with affordable items so try your luck there.
6. Befriend your tailor.
Fit is everything. You can have a perfect body and still look “off” with ill-fitting clothing. I highly recommend visiting a local tailor for wardrobe staples like blazers, evenings gowns or any investment pieces you want to alter. It shouldn’t break the bank, and often times you can work out a package deal if you have more than one item. Sometimes stores offer tailoring services as a perk. Case in point, Madewell. If you become one of their insiders, they’ll give you free hemming on jeans and free leather & denim personalization so make sure you take advantage.
7. Experiment with vertical stripes.
This pattern will lengthen like no other. Remember, you’re trying to create long lines. With vertical stripes, you encourage the eye to look up and down rather than side to side, creating the illusion of a leaner silhouette.
Alright friends, that’s it for today. I hope you found this article helpful. If you’re looking to browse more how-tos, make sure to check this tab out. Also, if you have any tips of your own, I’d absolutely love to hear them. Until next time, loves! Sending all the positive vibes from the DMV.
