Today we’re tackling the social media giant that is instagram. With over 600 million users, its reach is beyond powerful. We creatives need to take advantage and put our best feet forward to engage current followers and draw potential ones in. Compelling photos and captions are a must, but solid bios are just as important so keep reading to see how YOU can write a great bio on instagram!
A great bio is an absolute must if you want to grow on instagram! Click for tips on how to craft a compelling blurb that'll draw in new followers on the regular. Click To TweetLet’s start with Instagram basics!
You have four slots on instagram: name, username, website and bio. It doesn’t seem like much, but you need to take full advantage of each section because it’s all precious real estate. Your username should be YOUR name or the name of your group – type it as is, abbreviating here is NOT a good idea! The name, however, can be something different! For example, my username’s @sensiblestylista (my blog name), but my name is Kimberly Kong. In parentheses, I share my Korean name as well because I’m trying to share as much 411 as possible.
Next up, website info.
This is the ONLY clickable URL you’ll be able to share on instagram so be smart. Did you just release an e-book or a new video on YouTube? Link users directly so they can see what you’re all about, and update it accordingly. You can use bit.ly to track clicks – analyze your statistics and see what works best to slowly formulate a personalized strategy. Mine’s linked to my blog with a call to action in the bio to promote new posts!
Now, onto the meat of the profile: the bio.
You have exactly 150 characters to impress potential followers so don’t be shy. Share personal details in this section so they get to know you. Where are you based? What kind of content do you blog about? Are you currently in school? What are some of your greatest achievements? Get your brag on and list them straight up. Remember, you need to differentiate yourself from the tens of thousands of people out there so outline who you are and what you do clearly.
Think of keywords and incorporate them organically to target your ideal audience. Also, if you have a unique hashtag you’re trying to boost, share it here so your followers know how to get involved and/or stay in the know. The same goes with upcoming concert dates + venues if you’re trying to spread the word!
Think about your account’s aesthetic.
After all, instagram is a visual platform so it’s important to look at your profile and see how it comes across at first glance. Show personality with emojis and experiment with different spacing, forms of punctuation, and fonts. I recommend spacing things out vertically for organizational purposes – it’s a win-win because your bio will look cleaner and be much easier to read. If you’re an Android user, simply hit the return key. If you’re on an iOS device, type everything out in Notes before copying & pasting. The spacing WILL look different on your desktop so keep that in mind as you’re mapping everything out.
Consider using different kinds of punctuation. You’re not writing a dissertation so if you want to separate things with random symbols, go crazy. Popular ones include brackets, ellipses, and forward slashes. Now, if you want to mess around with different fonts, browse your app store – free programs like Textizer Font Keyboards or Sprezz will help you get your creativity on.
And last but not least…
Type out your contact information, and make sure it’s clearly visible even IF you have a business account – bonus points if you own a personalized email domain! You can also list handles for other social media platforms here but remember to prioritize. You have a limited amount of space so you want to highlight and share THE most important tidbits of your brand.
