Hey friends! It’s been a minute since I last updated you guys on my quarantine adventures so here goes. I’m pumped to recap my last week and a half for y’all so make sure you stick with me until the very end. I know I said I’d be doing more than just eating…but I lied – sorry not sorry! I promise to tell you all about must try noms though.
Possibly Tried the Best Pizza in Maryland?
For those of you looking for Detroit style pizza in Maryland, you’re welcome in advance. I recently got to check out Underground Pizza Co., and their pies were damn tasty. I’ve always been a huge fan of deep pan pizza though – it’s the best kind IMO! Am I right or am I right?
They’re currently operating as a pop up at 1604 Kelly Ave in Mount Washington and Pig & Rooster in Baltimore, but offer drops in different areas in the DMV as well. Follow them on instagram to stay in the know about location, specials and more. They may or may not be working on a crab dip pizza, OMFG.
The owner, Evan, has a really interesting backstory. He was a full time concert promoter, but due to COVID, he’s had to pivot. Him, along with his partner chef Patrick, create different menu items together, and they’re looking to open their own brick and mortar space. They’re also planning to ship their pies nationwide so definitely make sure to keep an eye out because you’re gonna want to experience the nomness that is Underground wherever you are.
I got their Carol Baskin, their Woodlands, and their Flag. The Carol Baskin’s their vegan pizza, and it’s made with their signature red sauce, nutritional yeast, cherry tomatoes, garlic, spinach and herb. To be honest, I probably wouldn’t get this again, but that’s because I’m not vegan! Don’t get me wrong, it was good, and I honestly wouldn’t have known it was vegan, but to me, it wasn’t as amazing as the “regular” pizza they offer.
The woodlands is a must for mushroom lovers! It’s topped with woods & oyster mushrooms, gruyere and thyme! And last but not least, their flag is “the best of both worlds.” One side’s topped with pesto, and the other’s topped with their signature red sauce. I highly recommend getting the latter! It was my favorite amongst the three, and I’d definitely get it again.
Full pies cost anywhere from $22-$30 so it doesn’t come cheap, but you’re paying for quality, and they give you quite a bit of food so it’s worth the splurge. You also have the option of getting half a pie, but they freeze well so you could always just save leftovers for another day! Let me know what you guys think if you try.
Covered more noms at Baker’s Daughter
Gravitas is everything I’ve ever wanted and then some, and lucky for everyone in the DMV, they’re opening a new market/cafe in Ivy City. I’ve had the pleasure of shooting their noms on various occasions, but I had to list them as a highlight again because their food was incredible, and working with chef Matt is always a fun time.
He’s planning on opening Baker’s Daughter in early September, and they’ll be open 9AM-9PM daily offering items like crispy falafel, braised beef breakfast bowls, caprese paninis, classic beef lasagna, and more. I haven’t seen the finished interior yet, but I’ll definitely make sure to give you guys a sneak peek once I have pics so stay tuned. Here are some of my favorite captures from our last shoot together – I hope you enjoy!
A Fun Studio Shoot with the Amazing Jared Wolfe
I’ve been shooting less and less because of COVID, but studio time with Jared is always such a treat. I’ve been working with him for years, and he never ceases to impress. He’s easily one of the best photographers in the area, and I’m proud to call him friend.
We met up at his studio in Alexandria and shot 3 different looks together. If you follow me on instagram, you’ve probably already seen some, but I haven’t posted any on here yet! Here’s one of my favorite shots from our most recent collab together.
Enjoyed Your Only Friend To-Go
If you follow my food blog, Nomtastic Foods, you already know that their Hot Nugget made my “8 Must Try Chicken Sandwiches in DC” list. Suffice it to say, I was beyond impressed with the food there. I got to try 3 different sammies and all of ’em were straight fire. The drinks were incredible as well, but that comes as no surprised since Your Only Friend is the brainchild of Columbia Room’s Beverage Director, Paul Taylor.
So, here’s what we got! Their Chicky Pep (chicken cutlet, pepperoni, mootz, provolone, beefsteak tomato, garlic mayo, and hoagie dressing on a soft roll), their Mort & Mootz (mortadella, mozzarella, shrettuce, onions, Duke’s mayo, dressing, and pickled red pep on a soft roll), and of course, their Hot Nugget (fast-food style chicken nugget patty, nashville hot sauce, Duke’s mayo, and bread & butter pickles on Martin’s sesame seed bun.
To be honest, the hot nugget blew the other two out of the water, and that’s saying a lot because they were both really effin’ delicious. All I know is that I can’t wait to go back, like their Hot Nugget is legit one of the best chicken sandwiches I’ve ever had. And I loved that it was actually spicy, like I can handle heat, and I found myself sweating a bit. I hear incredible things about their Spicy Panes Con Pavo so I’m itching to give that a go, but who am I kidding, I’ll probably just get the Hot Nugget again. It is what it is.
PS. Make sure you get a drink/s as well! I tried their frosé, their Salted Paloma and their Apple Spritz, and they were serious bangers. I honestly can’t recommend this place enough! The manfriend’s gone at least 4 times since we last went so that should be proof enough.
Whether you want to enjoy their food in their “streatery” or get noms to go, they gotchu. Head to their site to make a reservation or click here to get contactless pickup and delivery.
Got Customized Berries by Quicha
I’m a sucker for anything customized so when I saw the NOM logo imprinted on these babies, I high key freaked out. I recently had the pleasure of collaborating with the amazing Berries by Quicha for Nomtastic Foods and had to blog about it because her treats were SO cute and yum. She has 3 locations in the DMV area, but I visited her brick and mortar in Fed Hill, Baltimore.
I was beyond impressed with her berries! They were all so beautiful – choose from creative options like cheesecake stuffed, ciroc, strawberry shortcake and sundae. My personal favorite was her dark chocolate, but that’s because I’m obsessed with dark chocolate anything.
Get a half dozen for $16.99, a dozen for $31.99, and an assorted dozen for $35! You also have the option of getting platters for special occasions (post-COVID) so definitely take note. They’d be ideal for weddings, baby showers, engagement parties and more!
Covered Hearts of Empowerment’s x Timber Pizza’s Eat Up! Initiative
Apparently last week was a big week for pizza. As mentioned above, I found a dope Detroit style pie in MD and finally tried Timber Pizza Co for the first time. I’ve heard from multiple people that it’s the best ‘za in the district, but I still have a few places to try before I come to any conclusion. It was definitely solid though! I think them and Stellina are my top picks thus far – All Purpose coming in at a close second. More on that some other time though!
This particular nom gig was different. Jhunyae Kim, one of the co-founders of Hearts of Empowerment, reached out and asked me to help promote their Eat Up! Initiative. I had the pleasure of interviewing him for the Nomtastic Foods blog, and I loved learning about his incredible organization.
I don’t want to give too much away because the full feature’s available here, but they’re doing a lot of really great work in the DMV. They’ve raised over 30k+ over the last few months to assist various communities that have been negatively affected by the pandemic, and they’re currently working on campaign 6! Check out the aforementioned post to learn more and follow them on instagram to stay in the know and support!
Alright friends, I hope you enjoyed my latest segment of quarantine adventures. Things are busier than ever so definitely make sure to follow along on instagram stories! I know I mentioned updating Sensible Stylista more frequently, but I recently took over 4 new instagram accounts – that social media manager life though – so I’m not sure if I can commit to a more strenuous posting schedule.
I’ll try my best though! As for now, I post new content every Monday, Thursday and Saturday so make sure you check back soon. Sending lots of love from the DMV! And for more on my adventures, make sure you guys check out this tab and if you missed it, peep quarantine adventures: chapter 3 by clicking.
