It’s been a minute since I last featured a restaurant on here so I thought I’d mix things up and discuss affordable sushi in DC for my latest. If you know me well, you know I’m not a big fan of fish. Now before you judge me, let me explain. I had a terrible experience a few years back, and it basically scarred me for life.
Why I Stopped Eating Fish for Years
So, here’s what happened. I visited a fancy restaurant with my parents in Pittsburgh and got Chilean sea bass as my entree. And FYI, fish was literally one of my favorite foods back then! I’d get spicy tuna rolls whenever possible and baked cod was my go-to dish when dieting. Now, I loved my meal but had leftovers so I took everything home with me. The next day, I woke up excited to dig into my fish, but when I opened my to-go container, it was infested with worms. Suffice it to say, fish was no longer a viable option for me…but I’ve started eating it again because enough time has passed, lol.
I view that as a one-off experience, so don’t be grossed out. I’ve been eating fish a lot more, and I’m really excited to tell you guys all about Sushi Hachi. Located in Barracks Row, their patio’s officially open for those of you looking to indulge. On top of in-restaurant dining, they offer contactless pickup and delivery as well so definitely make sure to treat yourself.
Must Try Dishes at Sushi Hachi
Unsure what to get? No worries, I gotchu fam. I high key recommend their specialty rolls. My personal favorites are their Hachi and Alaska; the former contains avocado, cucumber, and crab and is topped with tuna, tempura crunch and eel sauce, while the latter’s made with shrimp tempura and avocado, and topped with salmon, eel sauce and onion sauce.
They give you smaller rolls (for more affordable prices) so you can mix and match. Each specialty roll only comes with 4 pieces so you can get a nice assortment for yourself or for your table. Their veggie rolls are also surprisingly good, like good enough to try even if you’re not vegetarian.
They have two options available: their cucumber avocado with onion jam ($6) and their shiitake mushroom and avocado roll ($7). The onion jam’s weirdly addicting – it’s super flavorful and adds a delightful sweetness that you’ll undoubtedly love. Eat it with copious amounts of pickled ginger to enjoy fully.
The mushroom roll looks fairly basic, but it was actually pretty damn tasty. I’m not sure what they did to the veggies inside, but the shrooms were delicious and had a wonderful texture I couldn’t get enough of.
Non-sushi Favorites at Sushi Hachi
Their shrimp tempura is also a big do in my book! It’s fried to crisp perfection, and you get 4 large pieces that melt in your mouth! Craving meat? Then you also need to get their prime beef “ishiyaki” grilling hot stone ($13). It comes with 5 pieces of Creekstone Farms beef and the following dipping choices: truffle salt, sweet BBQ and a daikon-ponzu sauce. The meat’s so, SO tender, and you cook everything right at your table so it’s a fun DIY experience!
